Ruppert Jones was selected by the Seattle Mariners from the Kansas City Royals in the Expansion Draft and became the first All-Star player for Seattle. Jones played 3 seasons for the Mariners during the Golden Age of the Baseball Uniform. The Mariners, as explained in the 1977-80 entry, wore v-neck pullover jerseys and sansabelt baseball pants with a striped waistband, the Ultimate Baseball Look. The first trident uniforms! We only fondly remember the home uniforms from this era. Perhaps they can have a role in the Seattle Mariners - Back to the Future movement! Royal blue and gold are Seattle Mariners colors!

From 1981 through 1986, the Seattle Mariners were a well dressed team. V-neck pullover jerseys with racing stripes as well as sansabelt baseball pants with a striped waistband with vertical stripes on the sides. The Ultimate Baseball Look. Royal blue and gold are Seattle Mariners colors! The finest Seattle Mariners home uniform was worn from 1981-86 and the finest road uniform was worn in 1985 & 1986. Second generation trident era. Two of the stars that played during parts of that era were 1984 American League Rookie of the Year "Mr. Mariner" Alvin Davis as well as 1985 All-Star outfielder Phil Bradley.

On August 30, 2014, at Kauffman Stadium, the Kansas City Royals hosted Cleveland in a "Turn Back the Clock" game. The teams wore the 2014 version of their 1974 uniforms. That means v-neck pullover jerseys and sansabelt baseball pants with a striped waistband. The Royals looked alright. The Royals wore that style of uniform thru the 1982 season. When the Royals decide to wear the Ultimate Baseball Look again, the only change I'd make to these uniforms would be to add numbers to the front of the jersey. A pretty seamless transition. Nori Aoki, Lorenzo Cain, Raul Ibanez, James Shields and Alcides Escobar on August 30, 2014 in "1974" Kansas City Royals uniforms. Royals legend George Brett, who threw out the first pitch prior to the game, supports the return of athletic wear, pullovers and sansabelts, to the game. Everybody seems to share the belief that that seems to be the right course of action for the sport of baseball.

Virgina Tech Hokies baseball uniform that includes an orange v-neck pullover jersey that pays homage to probably the Baltimore Orioles best uniform, that included an orange v-neck pullover jersey as well as sansabelt baseball pants with a striped waistband. The issue with Virginia Tech is that the jerseys are too large, the cap has a white front panel instead of orange, and the use of unsightly belted baseball pants. Turning our attention back to the Orioles inspiration, let's narrow it down to 1976. 1976 was Reggie Jackson's one season with the Orioles, Jim Palmer was still the ace and Paul Blair, pictured on a 1976 Orioles scorecard, patrolled center field. 1975 and 1976 were probably the Orioles' best seasons aesthetically. That orange v-neck pullover jersey and the cap with the orange front panel rather than unsightly white, really stand out, enough to be called the Ultimate Baseball Look.

Keith Hernandez played for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1974-83 and the New York Mets from 1983-89. He won the National League MVP in 1979. He won World Series titles in 1982 with the Cardinals and 1986 with the Mets. He also won 11 straight Gold Gloves for defensive prowess at first base. Enough of that, during his career he wore the greatest uniforms for both the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets. His career spanned the era we now refer to as the Golden Age of the Baseball Uniform! With the St. Louis Cardinals, Keith Hernandez wore v-neck pullover jerseys and sansabelt baseball pants, in addition to striped stirrups, the Ultimate Baseball Look. With the Mets, Keith Hernandez wore v-neck pullover jerseys and belted baseball pants, half the Ultimate Baseball Look. Certainly, the apex of baseball aesthetics was the 1970s and 1980s!

On July 23, 2015, the St. Louis Cardinals hosted the Kansas City Royals at Busch Stadium and both teams wore the 2015 version of their 1985 uniforms. For the Cardinals that meant v-neck pullover jerseys and sansabelt baseball pants with the striped waistband. Everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. Mark Langston pitched for the Seattle Mariners from 1984 until he was traded to the Montreal Expos on May 25, 1989 for Randy Johnson, Brian Holman and Gene Harris. Randy Johnson became a Hall of Fame pitcher but Langston was the better dressed player, especially from 1984-86 when the Mariners still wore their wonderful 1981-86 trident uniforms. Royal blue and gold are Seattle Mariners colors! The fans love pullover jerseys. Sansabelt baseball pants with a striped waistband look better and are simply more practical than anything else available.
