Chattanooga Lookouts

The Chattanooga Lookouts in 1984 had amazing uniforms. V-neck pullover jerseys and sansabelt baseball pants with the striped waistband. Incredible. The Ultimate Baseball Look during the Golden Age of the Baseball Uniform. They were in the middle of their affiliation with the Seattle Mariners but instead of royal blue and gold, the Lookouts' uniforms in 1984 utilized a red and black color scheme. Racing stripes on the jerseys shoulders and sleeves were featured as well as striping on the sides of the jerseys and pants. Very 1980s and that is a very positive attribute. The fans and players, if they're smart and have impeccable taste, demand that these type of baseball uniforms, real athletic wear, return to ballparks in America and across the world.

Maryland Terrapins

Black v-neck pullover baseball jersey for the Maryland Terrapins by Under Armour. Very nice traditional looking pullover jersey. Unfortunately, even when worn, the jersey is paired with pants with belts, which, quite frankly, is often the case. Outsiders, if you will, often look on in bemusement, at baseball teams that wear pants with belts, during competition. It's ridiculous and archaic, but it is what it is. The jersey even got the attention of the rapper Nelly, who wore one during a performance. Grow the game, baseball, and wear pullover jerseys.

Seattle Mariners - Ben Gibbard

Ben Gibbard, the frontman for the indie band, Death Cab For Cutie and ex-husband of actress/singer Zooey Deschanel, is a Seattle Mariners fan. He recorded a song about former Mariners outfielder Ichiro and has thrown out the ceremonial first pitch at Safeco Field a few times. He is also a proponent of the star trident Mariners logo as well as their trident pullover jerseys. For that, he has the respect of our community. Repeal the teal!

Tacoma Rainiers

Franklin Elementary School fifth-grader Isayas Hampton won the Tacoma Rainiers’ annual Tacoma Public Schools jersey design contest with a blue-and-red silhouette design, to be worn May 26, 2017 on the team’s Tacoma Public Schools Night.

The v-neck pullover design features silhouettes of Cheney Stadium and the Tacoma Narrows Bridges on the front below the Rainiers’ script logo. On the back, below the numbers are silhouettes of the Cable-Stayed Bridge, the U.S. District Courthouse at Union Station and Mount Rainier.

Yet, another example on how the public, young and old, prefer pullover jerseys over anything else in the world.

Pittsburgh Pirates - Roberto Clemente

On July 16, 1970, Roberto Clemente and the Pittsburgh Pirates started the Golden Age of the Baseball Uniform and became the first baseball team to don real uniforms, double knit polyester pullover jerseys and sansabelt baseball pants with a striped waistband, actual athletic wear, now known as the Ultimate Baseball Look! Gone were the nonsensical button-front shirts and vests and belted pants. The contrast between a flannel vest, belted pants clad Roberto Clemente statue and the real man, in a proper Pittsburgh Pirates uniform, that's completely free of nonsensical buttons and belts, couldn't be more striking. A great era for baseball and those sartorially inclined. Look it how young Montreal Expos fans gravitated to Roberto Clemente, you can tell they never saw a real baseball uniform before. It is an amazing thing to see pictures of Clemente and the Pirates from that era and to know that baseball uniforms back then were more advanced, practical and functional than any uniform today. The Pirates continued to wear these uniforms after Clemente's December 31, 1972 passing thru the 1976 season. These uniforms need to be the basis for all present and future baseball uniforms.

Roberto Clemente Statues

The Roberto Clemente statues at Estadio Roberto Clemente (Roberto Clemente Stadium) in Clemente's hometown of Carolina, Puerto Rico depict him in baseball's first real uniform! Both are in color and show Clemente in the crewneck pullover jerseys and the sansabelt baseball pants with the striped elastic waistband that the Pittsburgh Pirates introduced in mid-season 1970. The statue in front of the ballpark captures the moment Clemente connected for his 3,000 career hit and the statue beyond the outfield captures the moment when he tipped his helmet to acknowledge the crowd's cheers following that milestone. It's great to see the first Ultimate Baseball Look worn by a great ballplayer and humanitarian immortalized in this fashion. The people just look at it say, "yes, baseball should be played in real uniforms, pullover jerseys and beltless baseball pants!" It is the right belief.

Tampa Bay Rays Fauxback

Tampa Bay Rays original fauxback logo and uniform, first worn on June 30, 2012. Designed to poke fun at 1970s uniforms, but ironically is that franchise's best. Patterned after the 1978 San Diego Padres uniform and is supposedly from 1979 if the Rays had existed then. Pullover jersey and belted pants. The Rays, like every other team, need to burn all their baseball pants with belts and wear sansabelt baseball pants at all times. Baseball pants with elasticized engineered striped rib trim at waistband with a drawstring resonates with the people. Honestly, these uniforms were designed to look silly but considering the boring alternatives, they should be worn on a full-time basis, both at home and on the road. Grow the game and give that dull franchise a much needed brand identity boost.

Alaska Aces - Vancouver Canucks

This is a baseball uniform blog, but I would be remiss not to acknowledge the fact that the Alaska Aces ECHL minor league hockey team finally wore Vancouver Canucks inspired uniforms or "sweaters" in hockey terminology, in their final game in franchise history April 8, 2017. These are great jerseys and I really think it was a missed opportunity for the Aces as it was such an improvement over their "glacier blue" primary look. It's too bad such a great sight occurred during the team's final game ever. Regardless of the sport, this a lesson that aesthetics truly matter.
